Thanking God you're alive - why? This is incredibly rude?

Recent example: dozens of news stories of the F4/5 tornado in Alabama report people "thanking God" for surviving the storm. Yet they're aware that over 300 people did NOT survive the tornado. Why are they thanking God? Do they think they're so special and above the victims who perished? This is incredibly tasteless. If you asked them, what about the over 300 who actually died, would they say something dumb like bless their souls at least now they're in a better place? >___>
