Do extracurriculars matter for ivy leagues?

Now im not being extreme, but i mean im not a sports person and not in band either :/ but even though im going into sophmore year, is that still too late or is that fine to start getting involved? since i know colleges sorta let easy on your freshman year but really start to focus on your sophmore year and so on, but is that bad to start now cuz i dont wanna make it look like i started like way to late and make them think that i just did it to put it on my college app????? And is it true that people dont always have to be in sports or band and performing arts to be considered involved, there are other ways right? and say im wanting to start a club and volunteer and publish a book and community service stuff...is that or can that be considered 'involved' in a cause or "doing what i truely like to do' and thats what they think on my college app if i do that and write that down?? Can you give me some tips and adivce or any other suggestions for 'getting involved' and instead of sports or band and stuff like that that ivy's consider and like to see?? Thanks! :D
