Broken Screen help..External screen wont work?

I dropped my hpg71 laptop (P 17.3" Pavilion G71-340US Entertainment Laptop PC with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6600 & Windows 7 Home Premium) some months ago, and the screen is cracked and when it turns on its obviously broken. the screen is static, lines and ink is all on the screen. I tried to hook up a dell monitor to it, however it will not work. I presswed the fn f4 but it didn't work, it made a beep sound. Do you know how i could possibly get my screen to work externally or if i just need to give up?
